One time I was planning a solo cabin trip and I was worried about how I’d fill the time. What if I don’t make the most of it? Won’t I be bored? Someone told me — the boredom is part of it.
They were right! Being bored is an important part of the human experience. It is necessary suffering. The absence of distractions is more important than anything. It allows the mind to rest and then wander. The absence forces you to confront things you are avoiding. If you want to find a ā€œuseā€ for it, it can prompt creativity. Put the phone down and let yourself be bored. We need it. It’s a process.

It’s interesting because it’s such an American mindset that boredom = bad. Weā€˜ve been reading a bunch of parenting books so we don’t end up emotionally messing up our toddler (lol) and there’s a French author my wife likes who talks about how from a young age, Europeans teach their kids to cope with boredom and it becomes a part of their life + they understand the importance of it from a young age. Here it’s so different, boredom is almost seen as this bad thing. But I think for as much as the human experience relies on doing things and moving fast and accomplishing goals, it also needs long drawn out moments of boredom to reset itself.

marianoleonczik Yeah, I think it's tied to the American ideal of "productivity," and your value being tied to *doing* something. Allowing yourself to be still and just exist is harder for us, because we're conditioned by so much media to seize the day, YOLO, etc. Which is all true, but if you're constantling carpe-ing diem then you're probably not giving space to enjoy and process all that stuff you're doing. Sometimes rising and grinding means sitting and thinking.

It’s actually a privilege to be bored. I think of it as an opportunity to get lost in my thoughts and dreams. Normalize just sitting still. I love going out and doing wild things to chase that high that socialization can give you, but at some point it’s a bore. Sit still.

I have to remind myself of it 30 times a day. But if you seek chaos like me, peace can feel like boredom at first. Learn to love the peace.

a study issued last month found that dancing is the most effective way of treating and mitigating depression. Walking, therapy, and yoga also outpaced SSRIs. and if you're saying 'oh this was probably funded by Big Dance', there's no evidence of that and if you're saying 'that's just what a Big Dance shill would say', well honey you're right
