I always hesitate to read them cause some of them are pure gems and v important to understand the context of the book, but most of the time they contain huge spoilers... But an intro I'm very glad I didn't skip and would recommend is for The Sound and The fury (red spine with intro by Richard Hughes) - it gave the perfect clues so that I could read that first chapter without losing my mind (ifykyk) Pls rec more good intros without major spoilers if you know any
oohwormy by editions I meant the publisher (sorry that wasn't very clear) so the red spine is Vintage Books London and the intro i mentioned is by Richard Hughes, the book itself wouldn't change
judging a book by its cover, picking up the ones that call out to you, reading the first paragraph or page or chapter (but not the blurb on the back, no spoilers please), choosing the one that really hooks you in
100% will make your life better. always gives good context for the books (thus you enjoy them more) and makes you better at discussing them. bonus points for buying critical editions of books that are like 60% essay 40% actual novel.
...is actually pretty concise/readable, includes some historical/cultural context, and focuses on the main/influential concepts. Recommended! (I can't manage to read this stuff either.)
