everyone’s buzzing about caitlin clark, which, like, fair! but why is no one buzzing about janja garnbret, who’s easily the greatest competition climber of all time??!?!! she’s truly in a different level, and only mentioned in the nyt when they covered the 2021 olympics!!!! justice for women’s competition climbing! the whole field is terrific right now, and it’s so fun to watch. make sure to follow ai mori and brooke raboutou too!

As a sports journalist, covering rugby specifically, I’ve gotten used to professionalism being interpreted as a straight jacket for players when it comes to showing any real personality in the public eye. It’s obviously different around the world, but that’s the case here in New Zealand, at least for men’s sport. Women are doing things very differently, and holy moly is it refreshing. I was at a women’s rugby final recently where the best Kiwi side faced the best Aussie team. The home team, the Blues, won a penalty early in the game - not a particularly pivotal penalty or overly impressive one, more technical - but the winger was so overjoyed for her team that she did a cartwheel. It really was a bit of a profound reminder of the freedom we have in life. Performing in a high-stakes game in front of a few thousand people, it takes a bit of empowering to really feel that comfortable, and that has always been the impression I get when hanging around the women’s teams. They empower each other to be themselves in an incredibly holistic way. This player, Katelyn Vahaakolo, is one of the best players in the world with a huge fan base. For the fans, young and old, to see someone like her exercising her freedom in such a carefree and joyous way is exactly what we need more of from our role models.

discovering my love for tennis this year has been huge for me. from the paris olympics, to the cincinnati open, to the US open…it's been incredibly fun following my favorite players, carlos alcaraz and coco gauff, and witnessing their highs and lows. i've seen how difficult it is to achieve sustained success in the sport, which gives me a greater appreciation for anyone who competes at a high level, no matter their rank.

reading aloud to a friend or husband or partner is truly one of life’s little joys. swapping chapters back and forth is the perfect activity for a day in the park, a rainy afternoon on the couch, before dinner after a long hike on a camping trip, or in bed. i particularly recommend doing this with something silly, like a 1970s pulp fantasy novel or 1950s teen romance from the discount bin of a used book store.
