A young transgender person living in the metropolis of Mumbai often doesn't find a chance to truly reflect on the lives of those like them across the world, with stories untold. Scrolling through echo-chambered lives unfolding across Instagram and Twitter feeds, this film may seem borderline 'cancellable' especially due to the sexualised depictions of trans women and the well-known chaser complex of a man insecure in his confused state of sexual identity. Yet, this slow-paced, two-hour-seven-minute tale unfolds as not only a visually stimulating work of art (something slightly reminiscent of Sergei Parajanov's The Color of Pomegranates) but also a mindful critique of the very real lives of individuals burdened with striking the right balance of societal vs. self-acceptance. A refreshing break from the bombardment of anti-Pakistan films in India, Joyland (from the soils of lahori cinema) presents an alternative narrative that fosters empathy despite its portrayal of imperfect relationships—a narrative that can resonate with anyone who has had to navigate the complexities of family dynamics under a patriarchal society. Every queer POC who lives near the beach needs to watch this, then go have a nice cry at the beach Saanu nehar wale pul te bulaake te khore maahi kitthe reh gaya? (trans.)

(maybe spoilers!$) I saw this movie last night. I wasn’t expecting surrealist cinema with this one so it surprised me in a really pleasent way. Luca really knows how to move the camera and even tho it wasn’t as flashy as challengers it’s amazing how his hand guides you through the scenes. in a movie with a lot of confusing scenes and weird symbolic, oniric secuences you never feel abandoned. I liked the theme of becoming one with someone else. and how that is a spiritual pursuit in a way. it’s also trying to say that we are all ready one with everybody and the universe, but very subtly. Like with all good surrealist art, dreams and trips have real power and meaning, and even tho I didnt understand everything I think in these type of movies is better to just experience it like a dream. i have never read anything by boroughs or the beat generation but I know about the bc they lived in my city in the 50s. shoutout México city. And I know that boroughs killed his Mexican wife here. Now I really want to read the novel or something by him but there’s to much shit to read. Overall a good experience and a good movie. Recommended if you like weird but beautiful movies!!!!!

seeing a movie on a huge screen (as most directors intended it to be seen) and just indulging in approximately 2 hours of pure uninterrupted escapism without anyone to worry about (plus supporting your local cinema at the same time). works best with "slow" films where the scenes linger. total bliss.

i don't know who needs to hear this (me. i need to hear this. i wrote this rec for me.) but late-stage capitalism influencers reaaaally want you to believe you need to have this whole grand 15-step skincare routine with all the little gadgets and gizmos or you are doing something fundamentally wrong. hear me out here - you are fine. the only thing they are contributing to is the ever-growing need to consume and the systematic destruction of your skin barrier. as long as you wash your face regularly and put on some sunscreen every morning, the rest is mostly just for the vibes.
