a wonderful documentary about a relatively untouched island strip off the coast of Canada where horses roam free and there's no one to govern or be governed. it's visually captivating - documenting the unique landscapes and characters of the island. powdery whites, blush pinks, soothing greens. it was shot on 16mm film and the director used experimental development techniques, developing the film in the island's seaweed, water, and sand to provide additional texture and biomarkers to the film.
if you're in the mood for a mystical, scientific, soothing watch, i would highly recommend :) it's available on cbcgems if you're in canada!

Very immersive doc about a naturalist who lives on a tiny remote strip of sand off the coast of Nova Scotia and follows her 40+ year dedication to the animals that inhabit the island with her. Some really cool experimental elements, like a soundtrack made by bugs and film developed in the seawater surrounding the island

sometimes I forget that the internet archive just has a database of public domain films. watched this one about an isolated community in the Adirondacks consisting entirely of the descendants of two families. they were so geographically and culturally isolated that they sent social workers to try and reintegrate them with society. wild to imagine how some pockets of history stay totally stagnant outside of modern influence. this was 50 years ago and you can still hear the ancestral Irish/scottish in their accents. fascinating watch!

It’s a slow documentary with beautiful footage that doesn’t demand too much from you. But it’s also about the lives of the filmmakers and what stood out to me was their bloody mindedness about finding the snow leopard and not knowing if they would. So it’s also a film about vulnerability, hopelessness, and uncertainty. It doesn’t sugar coat at the end. I think in its way it’s a really good representation of what life is actually like, even though practically no one is a wildlife photographer.

the boy i have feelings for is in love with someone else. he tells me about it frequently and is experiencing issues with his partner. he told me that if he could give me one piece of advice, it’d be to not fall in love. i’d like to do it out of spite tbh.
