There aren’t many bands or songs out there you can point to and say ā€œthis changed my lifeā€ but this band and song did. It contains one of the dirtiest guitar licks ever recorded, an earworm of melody and noise. They helped me discover the Velvet Underground šŸŒ(and kick-started the so-called Paisley Underground movement that gave birth to the Bangles among others). My band could even play this song and it sounded BOSS (not every cover did, ha). So simple anyone could play it; but only THEY could write it. I wrote about the PaIsley Underground years later for Magnet: https://magnetmagazine.com/2001/05/18/one-nation-underground-the-story-of-the-paisley-underground/ God bless Steve Wynn and Co šŸŽ¶ this one's still a keeper many decades later.

this is one of the most famous songs ever, so excuse my obvious-posting. And being late to the game. This is actually the song that got me into VU this past year. Sure, ā€œVenus In Fursā€ is pretty sexy and grimy. I was shocked that the same band that made that song made this song. Gave me pause! if I have kids this will be my lullaby for them. I sing it to my cat while she’s falling asleep- ā€œsadie says/ that im really sleepy/ and a little hungry tooā€. I can’t get over how beautifully observed the lyrics are. Each verse really cuts into something so human… ā€œI hate the quiet places/the cut the smallest taste/of what will beā€. Felt. That. anyway enjoy.

Listen, this ain’t a hot take, and I’m pretty behind on this tune- but as far as song-titles that start with ā€œI wannaā€ go… this is currently in the 12th inning overtime with I Wanna Be Your Dog by The Stooges. Seriously, the only thing I dont like about this song is that it ends. The Roses could go in and out of jams for 20 minutes using Ian Brown’s chant as a refrain and Iā€˜d be listening to it all day. It’s crazy. the music just comes at you like an airborne toxic event and overtakes you. The magic of the mix, I guess. I still don’t think that their self titled is deserving of the best british album of all time. Madchester was a cute moment though. Whatever this is, need more now.

This rather obscure 1969 b-side would later become a huge hit in 1971 when it was recorded by The Carpenters with some of its risque lyrics (as well as its title) changed. Written by the great Leon Russel and Bonnie Bramlett and featuring Clapton himself on guitar, this song moves and haunts me everytime I hear it. One of the great melodies in rock history.

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here: https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/ The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ā¤ļø
