The piece of land between the sidewalk and street, aptly named the hellstrip, doesn’t have to be boring, tedious grass. I planted some hardy, low-growing sedums and moneywort in mine last year, and it’s still going strong with very minimal effort. Less work for me, more beauty for pedestrians.

Wow what a place. Longest running victory garden in the states, chock full of bees and squirrels and retirees tending to their little plots. You know around the holidays when people drive to a specific neighborhood that goes all out with the decorations and lights? It’s like that but with plants and rocks and herbs. You can wonder through these narrow mulch and dirt walkways and check them out. Some are pristine and some are endearingly slipshod but all of them are bursting at the seems.
