one of my classmates said this to me my sophomore year of high school and it was so deeply out of form for a fifteen year old trying to cook another fifteen year old everyone present kinda just paused and went "wait, what?"
it still haunts me to this day he lowkey got my ass with that one, if not for a strategically placed "whatever, man" that shit could have been *catastrophic*

Oh man, that’s brutal! I still get weirded out when my doctor legally has to ask me, an adult, that question at appts. So to get it from someone that age is 🥴

I was at a new school having a bad day and I just completely blanked on how to respond. Not my finest moment. Might even say it was my worst.

my freshman year of high school i went to a new school and i didnt know how to do school well bc i have learning disabilities. it was an academically rigorous traditional school and i forgot to do my homework bc i was bad at planning ahead and like generally keeping track of things. anyway like the first week of this new school i get to class and got called on about the homework and i had to say in front of the class that i forgot. this teacher was known to be an odd ball/old school and he yelled at me and sent me out of class and asked me and told me only to return when i was prepared and ready to learn. needless to say i was stunned and packed up my stuff and ran out crying. i mean i was literally like 14.
this then became the folklore everyone told new students about this teacher and it got passed down but no one realized it was me and when i became like a senior i would tell freshman and they were like that was you?!?!
anyway this teacher years later got clocked for sexual misconduct and buying kids alcohol lol

a treatise on the attention economy - checked it out on libby and got through it over the course of a work day, a lot of really interesting social and cultural explorations about how time itself is the final frontier of hypercapitalism and what decommodification of our attention and time should look like
the book starts with a story about the oldest redwood tree in oakland and how the only reason it’s still standing is bc it’s unmillable, and how being uncommercializable is essential to our survival. it ends with an exploration of alt social media platforms (mostly p2p ones) and what keeping the good parts of the social internet and rejecting the bad ones should look like
all in all a super valuable read; my only nitpick with the book is that odell isn’t just charting the attention economy but also attempting to “solve” it and relate it back to broader concepts about labor and social organizing, but her background is in the arts which leads to some really wonderful references to drive the points home while also missing some critical racial + socioeconomic analyses that one would expect (or at least really appreciate) from the book she promises to deliver in the introduction. but this does also make the book easier to read which is good because everyone should definitely engage with what she has to say
will definitely be revisiting
