West African music as a whole has a lot of percussion, in my experience. A lot of people make the mistake of only looking at ā€œtraditional music,ā€ when it comes to Africa, but modern stuff is really great too!! Check out the zouglou genre. Some of the tracks on the riverside label album ā€œthe compositions of dizzy Gillespieā€œ are extremely percussive, particularly those with Philly Joe Jones drumming on them. John Coltrane’s album ā€œinterstellar spaceā€ is literally just drums and saxophone, and it gets pretty wild. My favorite track is ā€œmars.ā€
