West African music as a whole has a lot of percussion, in my experience. A lot of people make the mistake of only looking at ātraditional music,ā when it comes to Africa, but modern stuff is really great too!! Check out the zouglou genre. Some of the tracks on the riverside label album āthe compositions of dizzy Gillespieā are extremely percussive, particularly those with Philly Joe Jones drumming on them. John Coltraneās album āinterstellar spaceā is literally just drums and saxophone, and it gets pretty wild. My favorite track is āmars.ā
