max cooper just put out a new EP yesterday and it’s so good. i might have a preference for him since i met one of my lovers the night we saw his set after she bailed on the DJ she was planning to f***. i mean this guy has a PhD in whatever he does, so listen to it for yourself. his sound is exploratory and full of innovative compositions, but track 2 is classic max.

try out maxwell’s 1998 sophomore album “embrya”. my personal favorite track is “luxury: cococure”. delicious basslines, smooth + warm vocals and funky, dynamic percussion. very enigmatic and sounds just like the album cover looks. not on this album, but i also highly suggest his beautiful cover of kate bush’s “this woman’s work”. he makes the song very much his own, while still being loyal to the original. his experimentation, creativity and wide array of inspirations make it obvious as to why he’s seen as a pioneer of the genre.

Maxo is in control of a new element, and MARS IS ELECTRIC is potent in this unique energy that fuels the listener throughout the project.
Maxo is known to build a new world with each record that accentuates genre fusion, reflects on the past, and sprinkles in some interdimensional travel. Theoretically, if a being from outside this world were to arrive on earth, it might have difficulty communicating complicated thoughts in a way for humans to easily comprehend. Yet, MARS IS ELECTRIC is the most recent example where expression isn’t diluted. The opening moments on "All of Everything” feels like waking up from an indigo-deep sleep in the middle of the forest to the sounds of monkeys, birds, river streams, and the whispering voice of the wind. Then, as you notice the sun shining through the trees while you lay on a hammock, Maxo helps you recall the night before on the opening verse of “Saturday Love (Cherry)”. Throughout his career, Maxo can be clearly recognized as someone who understands the world we all live in, but challenges the listener to experience life his way.
Leading up to this new album, I found myself listening to Maxo’s 2020 verse on Earl Sweatshirt’s ‘Feet of Clay (Deluxe)’ - “Whole World”.
“Eyes to my feet, can’t stand what I see // The world around me steady crumblin’”
These words have been swirling around my mind for the past month as I watched protests happen in LA, bombs continue to fall in Palestine, and people across the world gasp, hold their breath, or take action. In a time where so much anxiety, unrest, and uncertainty is re-entering our atmosphere, Maxo’s COVID-19-coded “Whole World” verse gave me an odd sense of familiarity, with a small dose of hope. Now, Maxo teaches me once again that there is beauty in the struggle on “Sweet n Sour”. Then, I found it easy to catch the groove similar to a spaceship’s bumpy detour through Saturn’s rings. Before long, “Donahoo’s Chicken” bumped so hard the ship ran into a few asteroids, then “Human ?” diverted the journey towards the equally rewarding and necessary crash landing. That’s when “Ludacris” and “Mars is Electric” revealed a vintage Maxo- a version we have yet to fully see in this new era, and effectively reminding the listener why we trusted him throughout this journey. Finally, “Anything” gives us an emotional return back home, feeling grateful and inspired to keep one another smiling together. Maxo always reminds me to appreciate today and reflect on yesterday, while MARS IS ELECTRIC is a tour of tomorrow. – Quincy Davis

among his many projects, my two favorites are 1tbsp (edm) and golden vessel (singer songwriter/indie). his prolificness and a majority of his work being collaborations are two of the main reasons he’s such an inspiration to me. he also manages to release music that coincides with whatever life thing im going thru so thats cool

having just returned from a week in berlin-friedrichshain, i’ll tell you what, i’ve developed a newfound respect for the simplicity in northern vietnamese style pho bo. it came to a surprise to me how many places served pho in east berlin: it must be the legacy of eastern bloc immigration from north vietnam.
the southern, saigon-style pho we are used to eating in the states, at this point, is already called “pho cali*” in vietnam, and hanoi style pho is served without all of the accoutrements and variety of meats like tendon, brisket, flank, etc.
northern pho is simple, contains a clear yet flavorful broth, and is served with just cuts of steak and thicker rice noodles. you’ll be hard pressed to find a shop that serves a bowl like this here. here’s a picture of a bowl i got at berlin’s new flughafen brandenburg.
*this is the ONLY acceptable use of “cali” when one means california. fight me.
