Ok so I couldn’t sleep last night so I decided to watch this film. Dude, what a whirlwind of a film. I had no idea (until my girlfriend told me) that some women really crave swallowinf random things when they’re pregnant?!? anyway, it was an ok film. It’s worth a watch for the costume design and cinematography. There were some shots that went crazy. I can’t recall the main actors name but she did her thing. It’s hard to give off a sense of vulnerability that doesn’t come off fake. Some actors “act“ vulnerable and some really give off this vibe that they genuinely understand the material and live in that character. Not sure if I’ll ever rewatch it but goddam what a flick.

Very surreal viewing experience with myself and one dude being the only solitary perverts in our small theater packed to the gills with people—couples, pairs of women, and a front row of college aged girls having a ladies’ night. They were talking so loudly that people had to yell at them to shut up. (After the movie I heard one of them say “I think it was straight middle aged freaky not actually freaky. She’s a straight middle aged woman in power who wants to be dominated by the man and that’s the only thing. And she was a terrible person the entire time!”) I was blushing furiously the whole time and shrinking into my seat and my jaw definitely dropped multiple times. Very cerebral and psychosexually loaded movie that deals primarily in restraint to explore control vs vulnerability…

I had never heard of this film until the other day, despite it coming out in 2004, starring Nicole Kidman, who is sporting the chicest of pixie cuts, and having an aesthetic/tone/vibe that lights up all my pleasure centres (shot in NYC, grey/pink colour palette, opens on a long tracking shot set to intense classical music). I think the reason I hadn't heard about the film was because it was so marred in controversy at the time of release because of its subject matter. Without giving too much away, Nicole's character is a widow who meets a 10-year-old boy who tells her he is her dead husband. People were up in arms about the idea of adult Nicole potentially being in love with a child. That said, all the criticism felt like it was coming from people who had heard about the plot rather than actually having seen the film, which just so happens to be a soulful, sensitive and intelligent meditation on grief and love. Watch it, I beg of you!

This film is, to me, perfection. Lesbian adjacent stalking, huge focus on real estate and the two GOATiest GOATS- Cate B and Judi D- going head to head at the speed of hysteria. This is what I hoped I was getting when I decided to make a home in London (every part except an affair with a fifteen year old boy. Not good!) Not only do I love the aesthetic- a kind of drab cashmere cowl-neck with a hippie skirt, the sense that everyone is ten degrees too cold, tons of crown moulding- but I love any film about our obsessive cultural interest in catching mothers stepping outside of bounds, and what that punitive glee says about us. Watch for the complex social message, stay to see a young Juno Temple whimper-cry “I’M FAT AS FUCK, MUM!" (she’s most definitely not, but she plays it perfectly.)

I have no context at all but I love it. Feels like I’m missing out but that’s alright it’s just good to hear somebody having a big ol belly laugh and enjoying this shit while we’re breathing.

I just want to show love to the ELITE Bagel. Whoever was the freak that was like “hear me out let’s put blueberry’s in the dough”, I know they were looking at you crazy but you knew you had a hit on your hands.
