if you’ve ever found your interest even marginally piqued by the mystifying world of fine dining, or maddened by their insistence upon ā€œsimplifyingā€ and ā€œdeconstruction;ā€ appalled by the authoritative techniques of one Gordon Ramsay; or affected by the devil-may-care sincerity of Anthony Bourdain; the work of Marco Pierre — for better or worse, depending on who you ask — is often credited as their genesis.
as someone who works in hospitality (an important distinction from merely being in ā€œfood service,ā€ as i’ve been frequently reminded), i have an admitted bias towards food-centric novels and the oft-eccentrics that bind them. growing up in a hispanic household that often preferred to cook all the things they couldn’t say (you might not get an apology, but best believe there’d be enough arroz con gandules for seconds and thirds that night), i believe in its capacity to mend hearts and operate as an extension of the love we have for those close to us.
for all his ā€œbollockingsā€œ — as Pierre White himself puts it — he clearly believes in this capacity for magic as well, and his passion, though definitively excessive in its shouty, cheese-hurling manifestations, can at least be empathized with. his ascension, storied intensity, and startlingly frank instances of vulnerability make for a really unique read, and a must for anyone in The Industry(ā„¢).
i’m also re-reading Dune :P

the hallmark of any vacation book - somehow getting it wet by the pool and fucking it up
really loved this book. ive been a fan of keith's writing (mostly his instagram captions) for a while now and i'm glad I took a stab at this.
i finished it in 3 sittings - very rare for me - and i walked away with a much deeper appreciation for visionaries like keith. it's brutally honest, quite sad, clever, and had me smiling throughout. the way he describes his approach to dreaming up restaurants, and the twists n turns of his career, left me feeling inspired.
need to try more of his NYC restaurants beyond balthazar, any recs?

A very enjoyable little fiction book about a man living in Czechoslovakia during the Cold War who’s obsessed with collecting porcelain figurines. It kinda has the same vibe as a Werner Herzog fiction like Fitzcarraldo if you’re into that sort of thing. Anyway I think it’s way underrated. Here’s the first page because I feel like you can often tell if you will like a book by reading its first page.
