New open source image format that seems to be the image format to rule them all! It has smaller file sizes while maintaining superior detail (like H.265/HEIF), it supports transparency (like PNG), it supports animation (like GIF), it somehow supports layers (like a PDF), it supports HDR!!! And all Apple platforms will be adopting support for the format when the new OSs drop this fall. Crossing my fingers and hoping that means universal adoption in the future.
I will say JPEG XL is a very silly name. The X references past improved JPEG formats that failed to be adopted and the L stands for "long-term" lol which alludes the hope that this new format will have the endurance of the original JPEG format.
