read from 2021 abt modern counterculture, rejecting tech overlords, and the dark forests of the internet "To be truly countercultural today, in a time of tech hegemony, one has to, above all, betray the platform, which may come in the form of betraying or divesting from your public online self.”

the internet used to feel messy and infinite, full of weirdos and subcultures and criminals and inexplicable little nerd projects from anonymous friends you made on message boards. then everything became twitter and instagram, which was cool until everything irl started looking and feeling like twitter and instagram too, no matter where in the world you were, and there was nowhere else to go. suddenly though (?) that era feels over, those sites are dying, along with google search, and I feel like the weird internet, the infinite internet, is at the beginning of a full comeback. I love that dizzy feeling that there’s so much much out there that I’ll never even get close to seeing it all. maybe that’s why I like it here so much?

reading a communist newspaper does not automatically make u a communist, & listening to redscare does not automatically make u a new-right contrarian (if that's a burn i meant it but i still love them). there is something to be said about getting informed in this gen-z-ish way as it avoids bourgeois news media that is untrustworthy for obvious reasons & also instagram & tik tok political content that can never possibly tell the whole story and is often misinformed itself. and instead of posting infographics get actually involved in your community in ways that matter to you! social media and identity politics are fleeting but knowledge & connection & respecting other people's opinions even if u disagree (there's a line here obvs if someone is actively racist/homophobic/transphobic that's a different story) are so invaluable and deeply human and rare in our times. lets bring these things back its our only hope ❤️‍🩹

well-written article analyzing cronenburg's films and contrasting them with today's sexual politics and lack of eroticism. passage i enjoyed: In fact, we are not impermeable packages of preformed desires, importing our likes and dislikes around with us from one encounter to the next like papers in a briefcase. An erotic craving is inextricable from the ferment that foams up when oneself is sluiced into another. Not only is it impossible for us to know whether an encounter will be deflating or transformative but we cannot know what sort of metamorphosis will ensue if the sex is as jarring as we can only hope it will be.

piece that explores our collective relationship with algorithmically driven platforms and theorizing why non-algorithmically driven platforms haven't caught on yet (PI.FYI mentioned ‼️). some of the references and moments in the writing style makes this article feel hollow and generic, but the overall conceit is engaging. also this article (and the general public alike) keep saying tumblr is dead but tumblr is very alive for me personally. "Just kidding. There is no pure place: we crave the end because it seems cleaner on the other side. We all live, and have always lived, in the muck—even and especially after death. Download the niche app, participate in the empty-ish forum. Labor to make the experience you want. Labor to animate a human internet."
