BUT! you should also spend time playing power chords to get used to the form/fretboard while only using the lowest 2-3 notes in a bar chord. You can also learn triads along the top 3 strings for some really useful chord shapes that will also connect back to your bar chord playing later.

yay to new hobbies! best thing is to try not to get ahead of yourself. start with basic songs with easy 4 chord progressions. get the hang of strumming, switching hand positions, etc. then you can start to level up to bar chords, tabs, finger-picking, and more! ultimate-guitar.com and youtube tutorials are especially useful in these stages. but be patient with yourself, and enjoy the time you spend with your mind entirely focused on the thing in your hands and not roaming elsewhere. what a treat:)

i’ve also been trying to learn guitar for a while, and while it may not be the easiest way to do things, the most engaging thing i’ve found is learning songs i reallyyy like – so i’ll really stick it out – and then also making my own songs with both chords that i know and chords i don’t eg. just randomly placing / moving ur fingers around until something sounds nice. while you might not learn and memorise every chord ever this way, it keeps you actually playing the guitar (even if it‘s a bit shit) + i‘ve come out of it with some of my favourite melodies!
