2020 brought a bunch of under-seen gems thatāve been swooped under the rug ever since. āSophie Jonesā is the directorial debut from Jessica Barr, starring her cousin Jessie Barr. Sophie is a senior in high school whoās Mom just passed. Amidst her grieving, sheās also experimenting with the boys in her school and trying to figure out what real connection means. A very ground-level indie with an exceptional main performance from Jessie Barr.
This one really takes you backā full of awkward intimacy, meltdowns, frank conversations, after-school drinking/partying, and sweet moments too. A great movie about grief, and never hits conventional high school movie tropes. Sophieās spiritual journey into adulthood feels more honest and grounded in reality than other movies with similar themes. Highly recommended!
