2020 brought a bunch of under-seen gems thatā€˜ve been swooped under the rug ever since. ā€œSophie Jonesā€ is the directorial debut from Jessica Barr, starring her cousin Jessie Barr. Sophie is a senior in high school whoā€˜s Mom just passed. Amidst her grieving, she’s also experimenting with the boys in her school and trying to figure out what real connection means. A very ground-level indie with an exceptional main performance from Jessie Barr. This one really takes you back— full of awkward intimacy, meltdowns, frank conversations, after-school drinking/partying, and sweet moments too. A great movie about grief, and never hits conventional high school movie tropes. Sophie’s spiritual journey into adulthood feels more honest and grounded in reality than other movies with similar themes. Highly recommended!

i love this bimbo ass movie. sophia singlehandedly keeps the tumblr girl aesthetic alive. itā€˜s disgusting how she’s able to capture the freakish level of nostalgia that only a 15 year old girl can feel while presenting a seemingly pretty shallow movie. it loves how deeply moving aesthetics can be. the story doesn’t matter too much it’s more about the indie soundtrack and the sexy actors and each shot making you want run away from this hideous world and move into that one. maybe i’m just always going to be an escapist but i think sophia coppola is enabling girls like me.

Follows the lives of high school girls in Brooklyn over three years and their intimate struggles among their friends and family - becoming independent, deciding on colleges, & navigating NYC.
I remember there were details about the girls’ lives that I never saw shown in movies about teenagers before. The documentary captures their desires to find their purpose and transition from childhood to adulthood in such beautiful shots & honest conversations.

Energetic, kooky bildungsroman featuring a cast of many P.I.-featured performers. Absurd enough to be on Adult Swim, prestigious enough to be highlighted at major film festivals!
Likely playing in a theater near you! Also on Apple TV 2/27. Saw it a couple times and would like to watch again!

Saw this at Quad Cinema in 2021, and has become a favorite ever since. Anne is a 27-year old daycare worker who is socially disconnected, and unsure of her role in adulthood. Her life radically changes when she tries skydiving, though as an audience, we’re unsure of the kind of release she finds from it.
Excellent Canadian indie about coming-of-age in your mid/late 20s. Deragh Campbell is great as Anne, who’s undiagnosed anxiety disorder keeps her a step behind from relating to her peers or finding a sense of happiness. It’s a brisk 75 minutes that’ll have you thinking far after the movie is over. Bought the beautiful poster from Posteritati in the East Village and it remains one of my favorites in my poster collection.
