Seven years ago The Ophelias made Always, the prettiest indie album ever. This new album, produced by Julien Baker, isn’t so pretty. The instruments are turned up and chaotic. Spencer Peppet’s vocals can be difficult to find in that loud mix when first listening, but they’re there and they’re urgent. Her lyrics are like poems with choruses. They aren’t always the most rhythmic or musical, like it’s more important to get her thoughts out than to craft a perfect verse. They’ve tagged this album as ā€œmermaid rockā€ and ā€œnature punkā€ and I think you’ll see that those are fitting descriptions! Cumulonimbus is a good song to start with. Salome is a banger!

Similar whimsical thing going on. incredibly talented vocalist and they employ oboes and a kind of folksy baroque sound with really stunning compositions however I still find them kind of similar to the Sundays' whole thing. Most of this record is fantastic but specifically Epitaph Ivy and Woe is very special.

while it’s almost impossible for me to pick a fav record of theirs, this one might be my most played. almost no drums which leaves ample space for robin guthrieā€˜s gooey reverb guitar and elizabeth fraser’s vocals to fill the space. i can’t help but feel instantly hypnotized whenever this song comes on, equal parts ethereal, spooky, whimsical, and heavy. despite not knowing what her lyrics actually mean you can’t help but intuitively understand the vibe

Energetic, kooky bildungsroman featuring a cast of many P.I.-featured performers. Absurd enough to be on Adult Swim, prestigious enough to be highlighted at major film festivals! Likely playing in a theater near you! Also on Apple TV 2/27. Saw it a couple times and would like to watch again!

Saw this at Quad Cinema in 2021, and has become a favorite ever since. Anne is a 27-year old daycare worker who is socially disconnected, and unsure of her role in adulthood. Her life radically changes when she tries skydiving, though as an audience, we’re unsure of the kind of release she finds from it. Excellent Canadian indie about coming-of-age in your mid/late 20s. Deragh Campbell is great as Anne, who’s undiagnosed anxiety disorder keeps her a step behind from relating to her peers or finding a sense of happiness. It’s a brisk 75 minutes that’ll have you thinking far after the movie is over. Bought the beautiful poster from Posteritati in the East Village and it remains one of my favorites in my poster collection.
