But especially Tangled Up in Blue -
“But all the while I was alone The past was close behind I seen a lot of women But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew Tangled up in blue”

Simple twist of fate is in my top five favorite songs ever. Blood on the tracks is such poetry. ~People tell me it’s a sin To know and feel too much within I still believe she was my twin, but I lost the ring She was born in spring, but I was born too late Blame it on a simple twist of fate~

or even from Take 2 of “If You See Her Say Hello” “sundown, yellow moon i replay the past i know every scene by heart it all went by so fast If she’s passing back this way I won’t be hard to find, Tell her she can look me up, If she’s got the time“ I still would argue that simple twist of fate might be better but those lines from IFYSHSH are a punch in the gut. I love talkin Bob Dylan :-)

In the empty lot where the ladies play blindman's bluff with the key chain And the all-night girls they whisper of escapades out on the "D" train We can hear the night watchman click his flashlight Ask himself if it's him or them that's insane Louise, she's all right, she's just near She's delicate and seems like the mirror But she just makes it all too concise and too clear That Johanna's not here
Maybe this is cheating but this really is my favorite poem and Dylan won a Nobel Prize for literature so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I mean, Dylan was never Bob's real name but a gesture of reinvention, arriving in a new land and telling a sideways story about where he came from. Kind of like this poem set to music -- the main character seems more than a little borrowed from Kerouac and his notion of glimpsing the the sacred from the low-down perch of the profane.

most beautiful:
yonder stands your orphan with his gun
crying like a fire in the sun
funniest:
And tho I know you’re dissatisfied with your position and your place,
don’t you understand it’s not my problem?
most perfect:
I used care
but things have changed

The man responsible for dozens of Teenage Symphonies to God "Sad songs about happy things" (the first time, as a kid, I can recall the sweet/sour combo of melodies that could make you cry attached to songs about endless, bottomless love) I've long since lost track of how many weddings and funerals I've attended that have featured this song; suffice it to say, "a lot." God only knows what we'd been without him 🙏🏻

Hey tyler hopefully this doesn’t violate some PI.FYI golden rule But after nearly two years of writing, editing and arguing, my book about the EP is coming out in May and can be preordered here:
https://hozacrecords.com/product/aifl/
The book is about the origins, history and cultural impact of the EP since these little objects first started coming out in the 50s. Over 50 of my music biz friends then helped me shape the list and review the top 200 ever released, according to us (ha). For those of you who are into this kind of geekery/snobbery, I can’t wait to hear what you think. A labor of love, as all books are! ❤️
