I love books and can be quite obsessive when it comes to collecting them. Jesse Pearson who I believe did a lot of cool stuff with Vice or at least I think that is how I became familiar with his work started putting out Apology Magazine some years ago. A magazine that combines all the things I love with contributions from a lot of artists I greatly admire, how could it get any better? Well, the podcast extension of the Apology empire is hands down my favorite podcast, sorry Acid Horizon. In each episode, Pearson, who is a fellow book freak, talks with a friend of his about the books they love and the books they are reading. 1-2 hours of book talk with brilliant people like Eileen Myles, Hamilton Morris, and Will Oldham, then Jesse puts up show notes that gives you plenty to fill you Abebooks cart with.

Diving into a seemingly mundane topic but turns out the history and/or impact of it is way more than you’d expect. Definitely fits your request the best out of the podcasts I know.

sorry most of these are history podcasts bc that’s mostly what i listen to but there’s a range of topics last week tonight with john oliver (youtube) - he recaps the last week or a specific topic in a very understandable funny yet educational way
conflicted: a history podcast - for something a bit more serious in tone - its deep dives into different events in history especially those that don’t get much attention
book club (bbc) - discussions of books with the authors and a group of readers - so many episodes going back years to choose from
slow burn - season long deep dives into events like the clinton impeachment, lead up to the iraq war, rise of clarence thomas
anthropocene reviewed - has a more hopeful tone - john green reviewing and explaining different aspects of the world like orbital sunrises
contrapoints (youtube) - tackles different topics from a lot philosohical cultural sociological perspective - love the video on twilight us & them - talks about decisive problems in the us from both sides my fav episode is the gun divide
colorless wonderland (youtube) - my fav book channel hes so enthusiastic and has such unique book recs
the morbid zoo (youtube) - deep dives into horror and thriller movies from sociological cultural perspective - she’s so smart and and well read my fav videos are on civil war and sound of freedom
nice try! - exploration of design and its interactions with people history government and more - highly recommend the episode about chandigarh or germania
radio lab - tackles interesting questions that combine law science history sociology - my fav episodes are playing god and eye in the sky
the audio long read - podcast form of long stories from the guardian on a bunch of different topics
more: - throughline - philosophy tube - 99% invisible - the experiment - longform - what roman mars can learn about con law - codeswitch - in our time - audacious with chion wolf - story corps - the daily - ologies

Posting doesn’t necessarily reflect delusions of grandeur about one’s influence. it’s a simple, communicative act. give yourself some credit, trust social instincts. If people had phones at any time in human history- they’d be using them.

Ranking things out of three (no half stars, 0 permissible) is a valuable exercise. The limitations force one to reckon with the boundaries of language and the necessity of a respect for nuance. One out of three could be pretty bad..on the other hand, it's still pretty good.
