Yorgos Lanthimos has always been that girl… but poor things just set it all in stone … hehehehe. I wasnt sure how down he was after watching the favorite, BUT boy did he deliver! My litmus test with liking a director is “would they be a guest judge on ru pauls drag race?” And let me just say, after seeing this outfit … oh his ass would! (Also, Im going to devote all next year to sewing -this year is reading grind- just to replicate this exact outfit like I was so gagged in that damn theatre!)

Bizarre and human film about "gay boy" drag queens/trans women in late 60's Tokyo. The out-of-character interview sections with the cast confused me because I thought it was the characters talking about an in-fiction movie.
fionageist recommended this to me as one of "5 Problematic Queer Films That, While Imperfect, Are Doing Something" and that's a good mindset to have going into it. Parts of it may kinda be uncomfortable or unfortunate or not line up with where we are now, but it's still an entertaining and valuable insight into a form of queer life in a different time and place.

The unrealistic visuals and the slightly artificial appearance of the atmosphere didn't click with me at the start, but the more l watch, the more I understand that it was more of a choice, the purpose behind it, and what it really reflects.
This is about desperation, confusion, addiction, obsession, and the big gap between reality and both delusion and illusion, and that’s where the visuals made sense..
Also, it is really hard to break free from what you've been seen through as an artist, especially for a big one like Luca; he kind of created his own print but still made it with new and different approaches and still nailed if that makes sense.
