I find that random “would you rather” type questions do wonders. Or just something a little off the wall. It Helps really break the ice, it opens up for a longer debate/ discussion, it’s so much more fun than typical, and it can give that person an impression of you being far more sociable than you are.

bonus points if they get the reference! extra bonus points if they don’t because then i get to dive into the full lore of this interview and my complicated feelings about azealia banks, which always makes for a fun conversation starter. i usually follow up by asking if they have a problematic fave because who doesn’t? i’ve found you really can’t go wrong talking about things that are deeply personal like music, movies, TV, or anything tied to culture. They’re all great entry points! yes, the key is to be genuinely interested—ask questions— but also give something back (because let’s face it, sometimes you’re the one making it awkward). I think awkwardness usually comes down to trying to find a balance of reciprocity. is someone talking way too much or way too little? learn to know when the conversation is worth sticking around for and when it’s time to excercise some of that beautiful free will we all have and bounce ✌🏽.

asking this when meeting someone new, fun discovery process for both parties! instead of “so what do you do for work?” or for the collegiates: “what’s your major?” this question serves the choose-your-own-adventure purpose because not everyone is afforded/prefers a stable job or education. it also allows you to get to know someone better, maybe they’re going to tell you about the 200 plants they take care of, or the profound though they’ve been stuck on. or, maybe they will think you’re weird and just tell you what they do for work, which is fine too, because it also answers the question. plus, people get excited when you ask them this. it’s unconventional in those early stages, cool points awarded brethren.

Sounds weird but it’s pretty straightforward. Lightly tap the fuselage as you board the plane. I was taught to always do this as a gesture of goodwill and respect for the aircraft. My grandfather was an airman who spent much of his time in the Far East and I think the cultural affinity for honor respect etc crap like that really sat with him anyway Ive had ppl tell me this made them not only feel nice, but safer too. Overnight flights to London suck bad cuz it’s hard to sleep on the plane, eastbound means a short flight, and you arrive all disoriented, in pain, looking like dogshit. maybe even in a state of delirium cuz you’re all tyty. And it’s usually ass early that you’re landing. Can’t even check into a hotel for like 6 more hours!! What if i told u it doesn’t have to be this way? Virgin Atlantic (the grooviest airline) operates an 8am out of Kennedy, with wheels down in Heathrow happening around 8pm local time. Yea, u gotta drag your ass up at around 4 or 5am EST, but just pretend you’re on london time already because ur about to fuckin be! You spend the entire flight luxuriating in your own row, free from the hell of other people. upon arrival, you dip outta Heathrow, drop your shit wherever, and go party with yer mates. Fall asleep anywhere between 10pm-4am depending on what kinda night u want. then u wake up fresh as a fkn 🌼 on local time with no jet lag. Look at the pic man. when did u last see a flight that empty ? biiiiig September 16th 2001 vibes but without the heartbreak

My friend Richard Turley turned me onto this book in April or so. I’ve been reading it in correlation to whatever the day is. I’m grounded enough in reality to know that next to This Legend, I’m a drop in the bucket. BUT— I am delusional enough to think that in diligently reading his diary, I am able to channel the spirit and the honor with which he lives and creates. My other main takeaways have been that he loves porn and big tits. (Nice.)
