Love debunking popular myths about ourselves and pop culture.
And his cohosts are brilliant! maintenance phase, you’re wrong about, if books could kill, all worth a listen.

the Michael Hobbes podcast universe -Maintenance Phase: everything all the idiots in the world say about weight or weight loss or health, deconstructed to the realities of science #methodologyqueen -If Books Could Kill: every book the most annoying person in your life has recommended, torn apart brutally and exactly #methodologyqueen
extended MH universe -5-4: the supreme court sucks, let’s talk about it and giggle -In Bed With The Right: great convos on feminism and sexuality theory and how they’re being used by the far right, as well as digging into historical philosophical context
cyber true crime -Darknet Diaries: interviews about wild cyber crime stories, very deep dives -Hacked: more playful latest cyber news, easy entry point and entertaining -ReplyAll: not just cyber crime, just everything internet. a hall of famer in the world of podcasts, has since died but if you haven’t listened i‘m jealous that you still get to experience it for the first time
goss -Normal Gossip: i’m obsessed with other people’s gossip esp when I don’t know a soul involved. this is the most perfectly produced way to do it, i’m gasping from shock and awe anytime this is on -Petty Crimes: because Normal Gossip is so well produced and they have gorgeous boundaries, there aren’t nearly enough episodes. this is a more coastal elite millennial take on other people’s gossip and very silly -Heavyweight: another gimlet studios creation that might be dead? it’s like Serial but for the most mundane personal stories that makes me cry nearly every episode
wildcard -I Will Teach You To Be Rich: insane branding but stay with me, you get to listen to real couples talk about their actual finances. Ramit is surprisingly intersectional in how he views people’s attitudes about money, you wouldn’t get the vibe from his general demeanor but it’s frequently nuanced takes. his book that the podcast is named for is a tough read bc he has a very brash “guy with a podcast and internet course for sell” vibe to him but he is genuinely the only ‘financial advice guru’ that I trust and listening to his more recent episodes you can tell he has a firm understanding of societal factors that lead to financial hardship. whenever i’m up to date on this one I can feel myself making smarter money decisions (sorry long description I do feel like he requires a lot of prefacing lol)

I don’t actually fancy myself a podcast listener but I go hard for Aubrey Gordon and Michael Hobbes. Their dynamic is unparalleled (you can feel the energy of them laughing, cackling really). They explore health and wellness trends and phenomena throughout history, and the podcast is deeply researched. Some favorite episodes include their deep dive into Richard Simmons, Moonjuice, and Joseph Pilates.

debunks and contextualizes sooo many common misperceptions about major cultural, historical, and political things. the host(s) are fun and not experts on the subjects (they bring on experts) so it doesn’t feel overly formal or “boring” either. and there’s so many episodes that you’ll never run out of options! the eps on the 2000 election, CSI junk science, movie rating system, and flight 571 have been the most interesting to me so far

Absolutely loved this uncanny collection of short stories. Ling Ma creates depth and discomfort in her characters so well, and creeps up on you with narratives that’ll leave you thinking.
Severance (her novel) was also one of my favorite reads last year.

There’s something so satisfying about seeing local haunts and everyday places you know on screen 😌
Been in Seattle a handful of years now, and really taking in how beautiful the PNW can be through others’ eyes and stories. Also some major nostalgia goggles for 90s Seattle.

Late afternoon. Find your cat and lay down next to them. Kiss their little head. Close your eyes next to their furry little face. Drift into a dreamless sleep that is pure bliss. Awaken to screaming meows for dinner.
