Roald Dahl was and still is one of my heroes. His strange, dark, silly stories helped me to feel understood as a child and like I was taken seriously as a human. I felt respected by him and he challenged me.
I just discovered Emerald Fennel wrote a children‘s novel.

His Dark Materials and The Devil’s Books of Stories (a bit lighter, a fun darkness!) are some of my favorites in this genre. The girl who gets trapped in the painting in The Witches still spooks me 😳

I’ve always said this was the book that made me a reader. I have a vivid memory of sitting in the back of my parent’s car reading the chocolate cake scene. Still one of my absolute favorites.
