didn’t have my first kiss til 16, my first drink til sophmore year of college. I didn’t get my license or first car til I was 24, I didn’t have my first bagel with cream cheese til last month... it’s nice to save things for later.

A weird transitional year

I decided I wanted to marry my wife at 21. This was a bit younger than our friends around us but we’d been dating since we were 14 and I just knew I wanted to do it. My 21th year around the sun was spent working like a dog for an engagement ring and to save for the wedding. I really hunkered down that year to focus on the goal. It helps to know due to my legal situation at the time (undocumented citizen) I couldn’t go to school so I went straight to work from 18. I think 21 began to shift my head towards engagement and marriage and all that. Did I miss out on the traditional / typical 21st year of fun? Sure. But looking back at 21 from the comfortable seat of 30, I’m thankful for that year and the work I was able to do and the money I was able to save to get to where I am today.

21 Is super early! You got this

Man when I was 21 I thought I had it all. Had friends I would go clubbing with every weekend. Was in a happy relationship with a woman who I thought was THE one. My artistic career in college was taking off, I was getting gallery calls left and right, people were recognizing my hard work and skills. Lived in a dogcrap apartment but still made enough to live on my own and bought the car I still drive today (5 years later) for $3K in cash. Turns out things can change, you grow out of friend groups, you move back home from college, good relationships can still fall apart, your art career has ups and downs and you don’t get the amazing job immediately after you graduate. Life is never simple. Tomorrow is never promised, sometimes things work out sometimes despite how hard you try, they don‘t. The biggest lesson I learned back then though was it’s ok to not have everything figured out. I’m still figuring things out at 26, and I’m content with that.
