he wasn’t right about everything but this playlist is a tome. when wading through nonsense spotify algorithmlically-generated playlists, it’s nice to go back to see what the human tastemakers of the era before are reccing. i do this with a few other writers.

“an experimental rock music that combined elements of art rock, jazz, and alternative with electronic influences to create richly textured soundscapes” ive had a personal “beef” with spotify and their recommendation interface for the past few years. the algorithm can be repetitive and creates an echo chamber of one’s listening habits. but recently, a very rare thing occured—spotify had created a playlist for me that was of a genre i had very shallowly dipped my toes into and ive been hooked ever since. mogwai. slint. tristeza. pop rock might just be the best thing that has happened to me since shoegaze. (pro-tip: pop rock if youre sad, shoegaze if youre high)

I just remembered that this is how me and my sisters would discover some new rock and indie music in the early 2010s (or I used my little sister privileges and simply got the music from them who's to say?). I just found out that not only is it still around, you still get monthly playlists that you can download songs from (or you can use the playlists that were made for your preferred streaming service) and the playlists are also still a great way to discover new rock and indie music if you enjoy those genres. I am still partial to the Best of 2014 playlist, what a snapshot of the times.

one of the few good things left about spotify. it’s helped me discover so much great music, a lot of which have become very influential for me. and of course there will be some awful songs on there but the more consistent you are with it, the better overall quality you seem to get weekly.

Life gets exponentially better when you become entrenched in your city’s local music scene. Obviously, I’m absolutely spoiled that for me that’s Montreal, which I unbiased truly believe has one of the best independent scenes in North America. But, you save money when some of your fave bands play for $10-$20. Through COVID, and sadly too long after, I was just doing my radio show in this loner little bubble, not connecting with the people whose music I was playing, feeling super creatively stifled. But, since pushing myself out of the house, I’ve felt like part of actual community. Like you can go to a show alone and I promise someone will talk to you and you can make a friend!! Also, getting to turn your friends onto small acts is so fun. Anyways, stan HAWA B.
