i think leonardo dicaprio is particularly uninteresting when he’s trying really hard to play Masc and the director allows it to go to that artificial place. it's like there's this additional layer of masking between himself and the characters he's playing when he goes there. and i think marty understands that, and he knows how to balance it so well as compared to someone like tarantino (i'm not a tarantino hater, i just do not think he knows how to use leo, sue me). this is the best i've seen leo in years because this character also has a layer of masking between himself and his masculinity, which also means violence and deception here. just a man who deteriorates into a monster and, ultimately, a haunted doll.

A Scorsese that no one talks about but should. Nicholas Cage is perfect, the supporting cast is top tier and it’ll just make you love New York.

changed my relationship to the theatre of the law. this movie includes the most unnecessary use of CGI in a major motion picture, but pacino plus keanu plus charlize is out of control

nancy savoca (indie director who also made Dogfight (1991), my favorite thing to yell at people about recently) made this gorgeous, weird movie about spirituality and mental illness and spirituality as mental illness and i haven't been able to stop thinking about it since i saw it a couple of weeks ago. lili taylor, tracey ullman, vincent d'onofrio, and MICHAEL IMPERIOLI give such sweet and layered and heartbreaking performances. big fan!
