RIYL postmodern fiction; books where the author draws a ton of weird and janky images to go with it; lording it over people when they (inevitably) credit Lanthimos for its original conception.

stories over time of a cast of characters loosely linked through the music industry
In a post-modern style like not too dissimilar to vonnegut
each chapter can be seen almost as a stand alone vignette
edit: after re-reading your ask, I’ll admit not the weirdest book, but it’s also definitely not run of the mill narrative fiction.
If you want weird, read Naked Lunch by William Burroughs. One of the most banned books of all time for a reason, grotesque, obscene, challenging, but imo definitely worth the read and I’ll be rereading it sometime. Helps to read along with a study guide to make sure you’re following what’s going on.

Longing for Lo-fi. A great short read delving into the psychoanalysis, social contexts and the effects of lo-fi as a phenomenon in a post-Fordist world.

ok it took me two months to finish it but this book is genuinely unlike anything else i’ve read. it’s a fairytale about the planned economy! it’s somehow both an empathetic work of fiction and an in-depth examination of an era and its ideology. plus the sentences are so intensely rich and beautiful. anyway its not for everyone but it was really for me.

Preferably to a niece or nephew as this is very much uncle vibes. And preferably not a new book. I think this is the chic’est gift you can ever give anyone. They can get a pint or something with the tenner while they read the book. Sick.
