Erik Petersen left us with many songs that overflow with wisdom but this is the one I go back to the most. There is joy in tragedy and hope in hopelessness. I listen to it every time I need to be reminded of that.
Five years is a long time but every second has been worth it.

to me it’s always been kind of a sad song but it’s also resoundingly hopeful
it’s not been the best year but it’s not been the worst, you know how it is- life kind of just happens.
i of course like the part :: “don’t cry
 don’t raise your eye
 it’s only teenage wasteland”
i graduate this spring and that’s obviously a big milestone. being in high school is kind of uniquely miserable and beautiful at the same time. i’m glad to move on but it’s bittersweet
i’m trying to stay in the present while also remembering that this is really “teenage wasteland” i.e: slums of adolescence.. what feels big now won’t ever matter again.
things might feel empty and really suck, but you gotta keep moving forward. i guess that’s what i learned this year.
long rant over now đŸ§˜â€â™€ïž

This song belongs to that genre of music that briefly flourished around 5-10 years ago. The sort where artists stepped into the stream of consciousness and embraced the meandering wanderings of their lyrics to create something akin to spoken word.
As such, this work of art transcends a simple song and becomes a literary masterpiece. Finn's writing (of The Hold Steady) really shines through on this one. It’s more like a short story, or rather a vignette, set to music. Every word is perfectly chosen, and gains an added heft of meaning.
Having lost someone in my own life too soon, I always tear up when he describes the feeling in the house, remembering my own experience of that oppressive spiritual and emotional pall that can take over a family. But the story he paints only goes on to get better from there, depicting the beauty, connection, and absurdity of life in such simple yet piercing ways. Go ahead and give it a listen, you won't regret it.

mixture of sadness and a feeling of "it's going to be alright"
probably because for a decade this has been my go-to album for dark periods

Listened to this song the second it dropped and haven't stopped listening to it. There's a line so sacrilegious I laughed out loud the first time I heard it. Impassioned and fierce and fearless on a level few bands can manage. Easily my most anticipated album of the year.

I don't know what's in the water over there that makes Australians so good at rock n roll but we should all be very grateful that they share their gift with us.

A fantastic book on prison abolition. So many parts of this book are shocking and difficult to grapple with but it still manages to be hopeful and encouraging.
