When I think of a song that means a lot to me, it’s this one. When I first listened to it I wasn't really in a great place, and this song served as a way to kind of feel that correctly. I mean, just listen to it. Everything about this song to me really just speaks, and it was made by n.e.r.d which is one of my favorite bands. In terms of specifics as to what about this song really rings, it would be everything. “If something’s yours, and you let it go, if it comes back to you, it was yours all long.” That line is honestly the main thing that draws me to this song because its topic is something that I have been facing a lot in the past year or two years. What is mine? What have I let go? Thinking about these things has brought me clarity, and grief, which is a theme of this song. You listen to the A section of the song (I was in band so yes I get to use technical music terms if I want to), and it’s a feeling of sadness, letting go, grief, realization, coming to terms. Then you move into a bridge, where Pharrell says “life is but a joke, and the laugh is on you”. This twists the meaning of the song, it goes from a place of deep reflection and grief, to realizing that what you’ve been reflecting on is honestly just a joke. This is another theme I have been seeing a lot as I live my life, a lot of the things I stressed about even in the past six months were minuscule problems, or things that I can now easily deal with. Overall, just a great song to me, it means a lot and will always serve as a catalyst to allow me to feel. Thank you n.e.r.d <3
