STREET VIEW OF 1940S NEW YORK

probably the coolest website I've come across - between 1939 and 1941 the Works Progress Administration collabed with NYC Tax Department to photograph nearly EVERY building in the five boroughs of NYC. Just a mind blowing effort and historical artifact of NYC history. You can spend hours looking at different sites, places that youve lived, eaten at or frequent and see how much things have changed and what is left from those times.

The (late) 19th century

i love love love all the technical and societal innovation of the era. cameras, locomotives, bicycles, elevators (kind of), moving images, telephones, recorded sound, and many more of the technologies we still use today all started then. also, i fucking LOVE impressionism - attached is my favourite painting, also from the time (1888). im a sucker for games like dishonored as well. it wasn't the best time to be a labourer for sure, but still would be so interesting to explore if one could be well-off enough to not be abused by factory owners imo. i would love to travel back in time to the World Fair in Paris (1878 - side note, the fricking statue of liberty head was displayed here!!!, 1889). just a year ago i got the opportunity to watch stereoscopic photos from the time in a giant wooden rotunda thing. so cool!

the empire state building

i worked here for a few years and often got emotional just entering it (dramatic i know!!), it is just such a marvel, truly emblematic of the city/iconic, visiting the top was always such an adventure, also my fav part was that there are these murals throughout the lobby (mainly the ceiling but also the reception desk wall and in the elevators) that feature gears in celestial formations it is extremely steampunk!!!!
