Robert Ashley’s public access opera is a real cult real classic. ever since “Possibly in Michigan” got millions of views I began to hope this would be the next video art piece with uncanny song to get the attention of the masses, but it seems the kind of thing with a protective spell to only find the right people. here’s ur invite to be the right people. you may also want to listen to his records, or his work with Eliane Radigue

An ongoing dreamlike monologue structured into two episodes of weaving narrative, where "clarity seems right around the corner" (D, Martin-McCormic), backed by avante-garde composer Blue Gene Tyranny
I will speak about this album every chance I get for the rest of my life 🫶🏻

I love the music of Annette Peacock. She is one of the true great freaks of music. She’s a poet! A composer! She also is one of the first people to ever run her vocals through a Moog synthesizer. I’m really into this live album she made with the pianist Paul Bley in 1969. It’s called the Bley-Peacock Synthesizer Show. It’s so insanely beautiful. My favorite song off of that record is “Mr. Joy,” which is basically pure romance to me. It sounds like what it feels like to be in love! Peacock’s vocals are distorted through the Moog, creating this cozy and weird level of dissonance. It’s perfect.

An absolutely incredible online library of avant-garde film, music, poetry, and more — it's one of the few parts of the internet that is still a pure, universal good. You will almost exclusively find things that you cannot believe it exists or never thought to wonder if it exists, for example: this 1966 documentary about & featuring John Cage & Rahsaan Roland Kirk! They compare and contrast avant-garde classical and avant-garde jazz, and discuss* avant-garde music as a whole. It is beautifully and strangely filmed and is soundtracked with their beautiful and strange music. And this is just one of hundreds of incredible finds curated for free on UbuWeb. You don't need to sign up or enter your email address, you don't need to pay to remove ads -- all you need is curiosity. It's exactly what the internet was meant to be. *The "discussion" doesn't happen verbally, but is done by the elements of the film itself, and by John Cage's poetry, intercut with Roland Kirk's live music (P.S: If you don't know Rahsaan Roland Kirk, I only more highly recommend this doc — but you may recognize him if you saw a photo or video of him playing music in his distinct style of... playing 4 saxophones at once.) (P.P.S: I would love if you shared here what you find there!)
