When I've been really busy I don't have time to read all the great newsletters I subscribe to. But then I find a moment and just read a few and feel satisfied.

Actually subscribing and reading newsletters. I‘ve been trying to remove myself from traditional social media platforms and not give in to mindless games and be more meaningful in how I choose to use my devices. As a bibliophile I prefer to only download books as a last resort and prefer physical copies. Thus I was left confused with how to not slide back to instagram etc on my phone and decided to find substacks and other websites beyond mainstream media in my areas of interest to subscribe to and read.

No shade if you do this, but increasingly it feels like my inbox is one long homework assignment of things I have to watch/read/experience and I find it utterly exhausting. If I subscribe to your shit, I want to hear about you. Your hopes, your dreams, your annoyances. Give me something I can't get anywhere else. Give me a report from the frontline of your one wild and precious life!!!

I’ve started saying this when things get serious. When Im looking for an ingredient in the cupboard and I can’t find it after my initial look: ‘okay, no more mr nice guy’. So begins a far more serious rummage.

Next time you write something, look back at it after 24 hours. Try to change any Latinisms to simpler, more Germanic words. (Change ‘fortunate’ to ‘lucky’, for example). Try to change passive verbs to active (‘we threw the rock’ vs ‘the rock was thrown’). If the word or phrase would be used in a corporate setting, get rid of it (‘in terms of’, ‘circle back’, ‘action items’ can be changed to ‘about’/’regarding’, ‘come back to this’, ‘things to do’ etc. Hope this stuff isn’t too obvious and is perhaps a little helpful.

People you haven’t seen in years, wounds healed by time, affordable food and drink, family, watching TV. If you’re as lucky as me there‘ll be seaside and countryside too. Maybe it wasn’t about the destination, but the friends we made along the way?
