1966 novella by legendary French author Violette Leduc, a pioneer for all women who think their lives would be better if they were prettier, which wasn't published in english until 2012. It's about a lesbian love affair between two students at an all girls boarding school and gracefully balances the line between high art and smut, the perfect place to hang out. Radley Metzger made a movie of it in 1968 but I haven't seen it yet.

this is a 2008 high school au of la princesse de cleves, which is one of my favorite books ever - it’s an extremely strange female-written court drama from 1678 that is widely regarded as the first modern (as well as the first psychological and first historical) French novel. the movie version is SHOCKINGLY faithful to the plot of the book despite being set in a modern high school. Also, the main character is played by Lea Seydoux, who holds my beating heart in her beautiful hands. The whole thing is available on YouTube and I have linked it in this post!

This film focuses heavily on the mood and feel. From shots of the French Riviera's rocky shore, to the sprawling fields by the Villa, you're constantly treated with the beauty of nature. In stark contrast to nature's simple & easy beauty, the characters range from narcissistic to "Bohemian" (as described in the movies summary). The plot here focuses on the 3 people vacationing in this villa, 2 friends Adrien & Daniel, and an unwelcome guest Haydée — dubbed the collector of men. Told from Adrien's perspective, you get to experience his mental contradictions first-hand as he battles through what he says he wants, and what you, as a viewer, know he wants. Éric Rohmer’s La Collectionneuse is a great character study, with the excellent bonus of being beautifully shot and extremely vibey.

Jean Seberg is the original cool girl! Plus, Jean-Paul Belmondo! Pretty much put the French New Wave on the map. I also love Days of Heaven (1978) though Brooke Adams and Linda Manz are more doomed than anything else. But it’s aching beautiful and will haunt you in the best way. Oh, and make you want to watch all of Terrence Malick’s movies, especially Badlands (with Sissy Spacek as another amazing cool, doomed girl!) Happy watching 🤍🩶🖤

Kind of a recent game changer for me as someone prone to waiting until the brink of falling asleep before I get up and get ready for bed. I started a few months ago washing my face like right when I walk in the door if I know I'm not leaving again and now I'm fully converted. It feels super weird in the beginning but I promise 11 PM you is gonna be sooo grateful for 6 PM you's forward thinking.

Out this morning. Live albums rock, cover albums rock, Bob Dylan rocks, Cat Power rocks, this album is perfect. Her voice sounds so good and the band is tight. My favorite ex and I's first date was to go see Cat Power play a solo show at the Paradise in Boston in 2013, we stood on the balcony and both cried during Knockin' On Heaven's Door (Dylan cover). Highlights on the new album are Visions Of Johanna, Baby Let Me Follow You Down and One Too Many Mornings.

I love seeing someone doing/wearing/using something and being like "whoa cool" and then copying them, that's how I've found most of my favorite things. A non-exhaustive list of things and sources includes: • Drinking coffee out of glass mugs with milk and sugar (Jeanne Dielman) • L'Occitane lavender hand cream (my friend Louie) • Mini bottles of sparkling mineral water at home instead of big ones (the bad guy in the Claire Denis movie Bastards) • Being gay (my mother) • Jazz fusion (my father)
