absolutely crazy sci-fi, retro-futuristic masterpiece. a bit of a slow start but once it gets going you cannot put this book down. antarctic expedition, ancient structures found deep, deep under the ice. international scientists investigate find and open a prehistoric atomic shelter to reveal two humans frozen in blocks of absolute zero ice. once defrosted, and using the newfound "universal energy" technology, the scientists and the world begin to learn what political events led up to the destruction of a much earlier and more sophisticated humanity. deep echoes to the cold war era time this book was written in, as well as today's climate. the book is dreamy, fascinating, dystopian, i can truly escape into it which is all i ask

this is an almost 900-page book that i was in awe of, a kaleidoscopic view of the climate crisis, set in the near-future. stephen obviously researched and made his best projections about what is coming, and it is fascinating and catastrophic and cinematic. there's a sequence where la is on fire i will never forget; there's a couple of those sequences really. he doesn't engage with whether or not a super ai will save us or destroy us, but i can forgive him. this is a great book.

this is one of tHE most captivating & compelling pieces of storytelling i've ever seen. it's multimedia speculative fiction about a distant future. it stars sapient space probes and an immortal and infertile human race, and explores their quest for fun to fill eternity. it's devastating and hopeful and i think it's maybe my favourite thing i've ever read, in both content and in form.

i'm trying really hard to radically accept mine and shift my perspective and see them as cool and chic and possibly even make me ~perfectly imperfect~ ??

"mature" tie dye-- tom is the lovely owner who dyes everything by hand every night, discovered how to dye on black fabric without using bleach and creates these crazy fractals. has so many cool clothes, i have accumulated a bunch of the bamboo socks they are so soft and cozy. you can also bring your own clothes for him to dye (they have to be mostly organic material). please go and support tom <3
