My favorite song by Silver Jews. Off the compilation album "Hey Drag City" (which features the likes of Pavement & Smog, amongst others), this song for me is the standout. It runs a bit more experimental than majority of Berman's work which I really like. It's the perfect song to listen to on the train; to just take a moment to be by yourself, and be introspective.

American Water is one of my favourite albums. I’ve listened to it a lot, and a few songs jump out as favourites, but I recently re-listened to it in full driving down the Kwinana Freeway. Not much new can be said about a cult classic album. It’s really very good.

This is a song off the compilation album ā€œAccumulation, Noneā€ from Smog/Bill Callahan, covering the early part of his career. It’s an otherwise unreleased song. It’s one of those songs that stops me in my tracks, the strange lyrics, the whining guitars, the minimal drum keeping just a slight groove, it all feels sort of empty and cloudy in the best way. I’d recommend more broadly digging into the early Smog albums.

Not sure if this is a normal arc for aging hipsters but recently oddball indie country has really been clicking in a way it never did before and Bill Callahan’s work as Smog is just amazing. His baritone voice really sells the poetic tales of self-loathing. Hell the entire album Knock Knock is about fumbling Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and if that’s not a relatable vibe I don’t know what is Album picks: Red Apple Falls, Dongs of Sevotion, Knock Knock, A River Ain’t Too Much to Love, Supper

Poet & songwriter best known as the frontman of ā€œSilver Jews,ā€œ and the lesser known ā€œPurple Mountains,ā€œ Berman has a way of exploring the beauty in the darker aspects of life. Berman tragically took his in 2019. He had such a special way with words both as a poet and a songwriter. My favorite song of his, ā€œFamous Eyesā€ is linked above.

Founded in 1995, Broadcast was an English band that drew influences from 60s psychedelia, electronic, and experimental music. Following the death of their lead singer in 2011, Broadcast has found a new life and a cult following due to the mystery surrounding the band. I’ve linked my favorite album, Tender Buttons above.

Due to the involvement of the US Military Sponsoring SXSW, many bands and artists have opted to pull out of SXSW as protest for the ongoing genocide and Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine. I’m very proud of my friends from Perfectly Imperfect and Baby’s All Right for dropping out of SXSW, and for standing in solidarity with the people of Palestine. Free Palestine šŸ‰
