Although I have lived in Los Angeles for the past 11 years, Houston is and always will be my home. From the fat & low hanging clouds, perfectly caramelized sunsets, deep-fried queso-drenched tex-mex, and good ol’ fashioned southern hospitality, it’s quite possibly the best city on Earth. In the wise words of the great Lil’ Keke the Don from the original Screwed Up Click - “Houston, Texas, is the home of the players and pimps.” RIP DJ Screw.

a friend who just moved down here from wisconsin told me Texas is like America Squared- every problem is exacerbated here, but so are the good things (i.e. EVERY type of person from everywhere is here, the nature is beautiful, the food is yummy as fuck, and communities band together when our governments fail us.)
Houston is THE best example and its comin up rn!!!

I feel like a lot of people on here live in NYC, and are therefore biased towards it. So as someone who used to live in Chicago, I feel like I need to give Chicago some love.
First and foremost, its impossible to avoid generalizations when you're dealing with cities full of 2.5+ million people. That being said, Chicago has way less people, so even though it is crowded and packed (big city vibes), it nevertheless rarely feels congested (except the freeways). Chicago is in the midwest, which means despite being a large urban area, it avoids a lot of the pretension and networking that LA and NYC possess. I found it was a lot easier to make genuine connections without feeling like people were constantly weighing you for coolness and clout potential. Chicago is cheaper, and despite being in the midwest, being right by lake Michigan makes it feel like you're on a coast. It was a great transition to the midwest from the west coast for me, slowly weaning me from my reliance on the ocean. Also the coastline where lake michigan meets the city is beautiful, and its a lot of fun to be able to swim off of the boardwalk right at the foot of skyscrapers. Chicago is also home of the skyscraper, and lets be honest, its a major city, and once you get up past 2 million people, you're going to be able to find all the culture and diversity you want (just at less of a premium and with less washed-up/trust fund artists that rely on the distortion of the hype machine). Oh, and Chicago has great food, parks, public transit, etc.
Anyway, I love Chicago. I feel like its often overlooked (vs. NYC and LA) which makes it the best option. In my opinion, both of those other cities are overplayed and overpriced. However, the good news is, with both of these cities as your options, you can't really go wrong.

Dino Stamatopoulos is one of the great comedic geniuses of our time (seriously, look up this guy’s credits) and a great man, at that. Moral Orel is his incredible stop-motion opus and the greatest thing Adult Swim ever aired (though special honorable mentions to Xavier Renegade Angel, Million Dollar Extreme, and Off the Air as followup Adult Swim bangers.)

Sammy Harkham is an incredible cartoonist and he curates the ongoing comic anthology Kramers Ergot. Since I was never into super-hero stories, I didn’t think the comic book medium was for me - until I read “Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron” by Daniel Clowes and was blown away and introduced to the alt-comic genre. Kramers Ergot is a perfect collection of some of the best artists and alt-comics working in the medium today and a great primer if you want to get into that strange world.

LiFER is a handmade DIY cut-and-sew clothing company based out of LA, exclusively made from thrifted and recycled clothing, and run by my incredibly talented girlfriend. I enjoy helping out with these garments as much as I’m allowed, and find the fabric cutting process extremely meditative. Traveling and thrifting for these projects with my girlfriend in far-off forgotten corners of the country is one of the great joys of my life.
