Alex has instantly become one of my favorite artists. The singer, songwriter and producer with a very familiar last name (Yes her father is Ernie Isley, 1/2 of the legendary Isley Brother) has a unique sound of neo-r&b, funk and soul with a voice and word play that draws me in everytime. Paired with a glass of that Gamay is eluded to earlier, it's over.

Okay, I just HAVE TO share my thoughts on the new Alex G album… The summer before 8th grade, an internet friend of mine (we met through the fan page I ran for The Garden😭) posted about how much she loved Alex and specifically his song Sandy. I went to Alex’s Bandcamp and started with the first track listed, Joy. I instantly fell in love and listened to his entire discography at the time. I had never heard music like that before, which opened up an entirely new musical world for me. I have an obsessive personality, so as a teen I was biggg fan girl, almost unhealthy… I wanted to know everything about him, gather all the lore, read every interview, and watch every video posted on YouTube (which I successfully did until he gained more recognition). This was before he released Rocket.  I joined an Alex discord server and met some of the most important people in my life at the time. No better feeling than bonding with other high schoolers across the country over our love for music! We met each other irl and traveled at least once a year to visit each other. I started a record label with them and met my bff at the time, who I also dated for 5 years. Even though we are not a part of each other's lives anymore, I am forever grateful for those experiences. As a depressed teenager, I really needed them and Alex’s music. I’ve met him about 6 or 7 times and seen him live at least 10 times. I’m proud of his success, totally different vibe than when I discovered him. I understand why people like the music so much! It's the same reasons that appealed to me. Although it will never be the same, I will be a fan until the end of time. My favorite musician of all time, no one compares!!! I feel so happy today :) My top tracks from Headlights: Bounce Boy, Far and Wide, Louisiana, and Spinning, but I love them all!!! I will be listening to this album on repeat. Music Is Awesome And Brings People Together 🥲

Noticed that he produced a song by an artist Merce Lemon that came out today and did sort of a deep dive on him. He is a Asheville based producer who has worked with some of the most up and coming indie rock groups of the last couple of years like Wednesday, Indigo De Souza, MJ Lenderman, Snail Mail and Squirrel Flower. His body of work is truly astonishing while having a reasonably low profile.

This artist was introduced to me last month by a boy who ended up ghosting me. However, I’m glad that it all happened because I really love this guy’s music and his lyrics are especially great. Big Black Car is one of my favorites but he’s got some other really great ones too!

One of my favorite rituals is burning incense. Filling my space with aromas that take me places. Founded and created by Junior Adesanya, Cremate is a London based incense company. They specialize in all-natural hand dipped charcoal incense cones. Honestly it eff’d me up the first burn because I wasn't ready for how natural the scent would feel, like I FELT IT! I burnt my first cone from them from a collaboration Cremate had done with Affix and it took me places, while equally grounding me with Mother Earth.

Crime drama has always been my favorite genre to watch or read about. Not sure what that says about me but it is my truth. The first book series that immediately engulfed me from the first page of the first book to the last page of the last book was the story of Tom Ripley. Written by the talented Patricia Highsmith. This 5 book series follows the story of Tom Ripley, a sleek con artist and serial killer who seems to always find trouble and run towards it, while in the end always escaping consequence. Side bar: We all remember the 1999 film starring Matt Damon “The Talented Mr Ripley” named after the first book, but also another must watch adaptation, and much better is the 1977 film by Wim Wenders “The American Friend” which follow the third book in the series “Ripley’s Game”.

Set in the south London neighborhood of Brixton in 1980. The film follows Blue, a young Jamaican man and his friends as he pursues his music career while dealing with the realness of racism and xenophobia. When released in theaters the movie Originally deemed “too controversial, and likely to incite racial tension” and was given a “X” rating. Funny enough it was finally released in the US in 2019 right in the midst of our own racial reckoning. Right now more than ever Babylon feels very close to home. I highly recommend the watch, Plus the music in the film is sooo damn good!!
