For my 30th birthday (last year) all I wanted was to have a slumber party with my best friend! We chose The Beekman, known for its stunning atrium. However, the biggest thrill was the toiletries by D.S. & Durga in their Bowmakers scent. Bowmakers is supposed to smell like a violin shop in Massachusetts, which is coincidentally where I am from. I fell in love with the scent and ordered the perfume shortly after. I use Neutrogena shampoo for my scalp that smells like coal tar and Bowmakers just happens to go perfectly with that, admittedly funky, top note. The first time my mom came to visit after I started wearing Bowmakers she got really excited about it. I still had a bottle of the shampoo from my hotel stay so I gave it to her to take home.Ā Later she told me she had been ārationingā it to make it last longer which broke my heart a little bit because my mom is the most wonderful person in the world and deserves the best of everything. Of course, I had to buy her a bottle of Bowmakers for Christmas.

šThere have been a handful of occasions where Iāve smelled the now-discontinued shampoo my momās late best gay friend Jackie used (who called me his little bitch when I was growing up and taught me everything I know about style, elegance, and attitude) and it made me cry. The smells of lumber, soil, and wood varnish remind me of the countless hours spent in my childhood with my dad in the greenhouse, the back patio workshop and at various supply warehouses.

Iāve posted that I wear Fracas every time I want to remember a happy significant day so thatās probably my most strongly nostalgic scent.
The smell of old books and cigarettes! When I come into my apartment after stepping out for just a moment after making espresso and the lingering smell makes me feel like Iām in a cafe! The smell of a REAL Christmas tree!

My husband surprised me with the iconic Marissa Zappas perfume last year for my bday ā the iconic elixir said to launch birthday girls straight to cloud nine. It smells like a warm cake capped with bright lemon tuberose frosting, so I give myself a spritz whenever I need a mood lift or have something worth celebrating. š
