YHWH NAILGUN

🌵New Mexico, 🎥Les Blank, 💬Debates between ancient Hindus and Buddhists, and more.

YHWH Nailgun is a New York City-based experimental band, composed of Zack Borzone, Saguiv Rosenstock, Jack Tobias, and Sam Pickard. I first discovered them when they opened for fellow PI favorite act Xiu Xiu. Describing their sound isn’t simple, I’ve noticed some recurrent descriptors — think “visceral,” “abrasive,” “intense,” and “brutal.” My favorite description, though, comes from Crack Magazine, which called them “Animal Collective meets Death Grips via Show Me the Body, with a hint of math-rock veterans Battles” in an interview last week. Personally, I’d call it captivating and really effing awesome. I've been hooked on their recently released singles in anticipation of their debut album, 45 Pounds, out on March 21st. Until then, you can catch the band at a few SXSW showcases (including ours - mark yourself as going) or grab tickets for their upcoming North American tour. Lucky for us, the guys from YHWH Nailgun are here to tell us what they've been into.

I like this video of Leigh Bowery. I love the crazy enthusiasm in his eyes and the clothes make me laugh out loud and are so beautiful. Something about how clear his voice is when he speaks is unsettling and hilarious to me. Never seen clothes express so much pain and joy at the same time. Would have liked to meet him, RIP -Zack Borzone

Underrated state. No joy like eating a green chile breakfast at Frontier Cafe (Albuquerque) or El Jacalito (Las Cruces). White Sands is a wild place (the sand stays cool and feels different than most sands) and the drive coming down from Colorado is very dangerous but it’s worth seeing those dwarf pines covered in snow - I’ve never seen anything like it. I like the people there too, everyone’s friendly and hospitable and most of them speak my language. -Saguiv Rosenstock

I can’t remember the last time I felt this way in a museum. Spent my whole day there and learned a lot. It was truly moving and inspiring. Can’t recommend it enough if you’re in Copenhagen- even if sculptures aren’t your thing, this place will change that about you. Also the building is majestic and beautiful. Perfect place. -Saguiv Rosenstock

I like to read a lot of religious stuff, and probably the best part of the history of religion is the last 2500 years of Hindus and Buddhists roasting each other in long philosophical screeds. They love calling each other morons and implying that the other school of thought is just malicious lies. There's all these legends about specific monks and mystics "defeating" one another.  These debates are still thriving on social media and its become most of my youtube algorithm. -Sam Pickard

Don’t think I could give a higher recommendation than Les Blank. Greatest American Film maker in my opinion. Doesn’t miss. Every film represents the simplicities in life through different American communities and traditions. The intimate way he films makes it seem like he’s just shooting without a plan. He’s just filming the environment. It’s all natural. Theres so much innocence and I don’t think this could exist anymore. It’s right before everyday people developed a “performative” identity when being filmed so there’s still that honesty and vulnerability. -Jack Tobias

Europe’s low budget chain hotel Ibis has amazing bread for breakfast. It’s incredible. I’m not sure how they have accomplished such a feat. I'm not sure which seeds are in the crust but they're fresh and phenomenal. Also it doesn't mess your brain up like the processed bread here. -Jack Tobias
