Today we're featuring Brendan, a.k.a @BRENDANOOOOO, a FYI pro (literally and figuratively). With over 700 recommendations on his profile, we're thrilled to hear more about Brendan's taste.

In May of 1998 my mom gave birth to me in Connecticut, in March of 2006 Square Enix released Kingdom Hearts II on the Playstation 2 in the United States, and in January of 2024 I joined PI.FYI. These are the three most important moments of my life. Iā€™m a violinist, my day job is spreadsheets in music, my biggest passion is friendship, and Iā€™m gonna be living the dream in Brooklyn for the rest of my life.

PI: What does ā€œtasteā€ mean to you?

Everyone has a taste, as in everyone has a certain preference for how they express themselves and how they consume the expression of the world around them. But to "have taste" is to have such a clear (and possibly curated) idea of what you like and how you express yourself/your interests that it is something recognizable, unique, and perhaps admirable to those around you. There's no such thing as "bad taste" in this sense of the word, only unclear taste.Ā I don't often think too hard about what I like or spend time making sure my outfit is uniquely me or uniquely in the zeitgeist. My natural skepticism has lent me a discernment which ensures that what I express and consume is uniquely me. I often feel a firm attraction towards something, and I stay firm to what I am attracted to. So in that sense my taste isnā€™t intentional, but it is clear and it is me.

PI: How do you choose an experience thatā€™s worthy of recommendation (in your eyes)? Is it a recurring moment of joy, or based on a gut feeling?

I rely on gut feeling mostly. Something pops into my head that has impacted my life and I feel the need to share. The need to share drives a lot of my usage of the app. Itā€™s the idea that you have this something that no one else in your life really gets, and that if you put that something out there enough youā€™re gonna find that person that feels that something too, and perhaps that satisfies some greater connection youā€™ve been needing. Itā€™s like youā€™ve been third wheeling at a party and you meet a girl and you find out you like the same movie, and somehow that just means the whole world to you. Imagine that but an app.

PI: Which PI.FYI user should we feature next?

User @SOFT (fka @BABY) has become a good online friend, anything she says is sure to make you think. I could go on and on about all of the people from this site who have colored my life in some capacity who I think youā€™d be lucky to let color yours, so I'll just write a little list: @MARIANOLEONCZIK @FLORINEGRASSENHOPPER @ROYALLMONARCH @ARIYA @ICKYVICKY. And a special shoutout to everyone else who has already been featured. They're all cool people. Lots of cool things are happening here

PI: Do you have any recommendations for us?

One of my favorite creative outlets. Twitter is over. Taking a selfie and overlaying your face with your deepest and most unhinged thoughts is the closest to earnestness we can get in the digital age.

Entirely underrated. The coolest D&D class. Not enough monks out there. Their whole thing is punching and kicking, two of the coolest things you can do. I donā€™t know why we have so many barbarians but no monks when the only real difference between the two classes is that monks have been to therapy. The monk I play as is named Brother Ken of the Brotherhood of Brotherly Love. Heā€™s awesome. All of your favs are (mechanically) monks. Tifa from Final Fantasy VII? Snow from Final Fantasy XIII? Half of the characters from Street Fighter? Monks! Live out your fist fighting dreams. Roll a monk.

A history of superhero comics written by my favorite comic book writer, Grant Morrison. Or at least thatā€™s what itā€™s billed as. The book quickly evolves into Grantā€™s autobiography and a retrospective on their practice of chaos magic. I think more than anything else itā€™s an awesome insight into one of the greatest comic writers of all time. Iā€™ve reccā€™d Grantā€™s works time and time again. If you ever want to get into trippy Scottish punk superhero comics, you should start with Morrisonā€™s Animal Man (1988 - 1990), followed by their historic run on Doom Patrol (1989 - 1993), then be permanently changed by their four-issue Flex Mentallo (1996) miniseries (my favorite comic book of all time), be blown away by All-Star Superman (2005 - 2008) (arguably their most acclaimed work), and if your brain hasnā€™t melted into mush yet you should experience The Multiversity (2014 - 2015). God I love comic books.

The most gorgeous morning commute music you can choose. The perpetual motion and repetitive tones get your brain ready for the mechanical nature of the workday, but the choice in instrumentation and the swells of whatever instrument is taking the lead really prime your soul to find wonder in your everyday.

I am going to speak on this both within the PI.FYI ecosystem and outside, in my real life. I consider myself to be gregarious in a way where I am often holding wonderful conversations with wonderful people who do not share my interests. By being immensely charming and well-spoken (or perhaps by having very very patient friends and acquaintances), I find myself able to talk about things I like without boring another person. I donā€™t think a lot of my taste is something that goes viral with people on this site, or is interesting to people who I get along with. Iā€™m a gemini and I do feel the pull to try and alter myself to who Iā€™m talking to, but I think the ability to just be earnest about yourself will get you way farther and help you develop much more meaningful relationships than just Mirroring Your Way Through Life. If you lead through life with a genuine desire to connect and care and make people leave the room feeling better, I donā€™t think it matters if youā€™re a geek or freak, I think it just matters that you were honest. Iā€™ve had one or two viral posts on PI.FYI, but the recs Iā€™ve been most excited to write are for a comic book or video game. Those recs donā€™t get any likes at all. And honestly I think thatā€™s perfectly fine, because beyond being just a platform to connect with earnest people, this is an archive of interests and personality. In 700 years when the digital museum archivists are sifting through all the internet servers that havenā€™t eroded, putting together The Final Digital Archive Of You or Somebody or Whatever, I put something out there that was a little bit honest. Though, I donā€™t think I have the impulse to leave behind a perfect digital representation of myself. I think the most important things in life are things you canā€™t leave behind, because they are moments that are meant to be forgotten when you and everyone you know are gone. But one day someoneā€™s going to be in a boring university library sifting through my recs on Grant Morrisonā€™s bibliography, and theyā€™ll be Wondering Why I Felt That Way. And by and large theyā€™ll know.
