🚰 Faucets, 🪐 Planet 9, 🌿Da Hing Plant Shop, and more.

Nick Poe is an NYC-based American architectural designer, artist, and entrepreneur. His repertoire includes designed spaces for the Safdie Brothers, Jacqueline Sullivan Gallery, Tremaine Emory, The Paris Review, among a number of private and celebrity clients. He also founded some of the best spots in the city- the dinner party venue Lee's Private Dining Room and the cocktail bar Time Again (where I've spotted many Perfectly Imperfect guests), both on Canal Street. In 2015 he co-founded the yoga studio SKY TING, which he sold in 2023. Poe runs the design studio 31 ARCH, through which he designs for residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces as well as produces unique furniture, lighting and other objects. Lucky for us, Nick's here to tell us what he's been into.

I love outer space, and am fascinated by evidence of a new planet in our solar system, currently referred to as Planet 9. Astronomers measured patterns of gravitational wake, describing the path of a planet that is about ve times the mass of Earth, with an orbit of about 10,000 years. The first photograph of this planet is expected later this year, 2025, when a new telescope called Vera Rubin goes online in Chile. Once there is a photo of the planet, it can be officially named, added to wikipedia, and printed on kid's lunchboxes worldwide. Far out!

I love hotels, and gatekeeping… but this is one of my favorites in the world. It’s not about a fancy spa, or a posh gym or endless views. It’s just a classic city hotel, in one of the top 3 best cities in the world. Half is historic, half is refinished. I can’t wait to design a hotel.

Turns out nature is cool. Especially with a big dog who loves to swim and smell dirt. Every summer I find great little hidden swimming holes and hikes and stuff not on google. It’s really well designed too. Go find a hole and take a hike.

Car brands forgot how to make a beautiful car. What gives? The new tech is great functionally, but the forms suck, they are all too damn slick or showy or bubbly. I really can't find a modern car or truck that looks good. I don’t understand it. There are endless beautiful old cars. I especially love the boxy old jeep XJs (pre 2001), and old range rover classics (pre 1996). The best new car I’ve seen is the one new model of the Toyota Land Cruiser, you of course can’t get in the US. On a recent trip to Tokyo, I fell in love with the old sedan taxis, mainly the Toyota Century (pre 2017), incredible. I’d love to design a car one day.

There’s something mystical about the game. It’s a deep puzzle with ancient roots, and an international language of sorts. It’s simple and complex. I’’ve been destroyed by 7 year olds, people who likely can’t spell the word “February”. In New York we're spoiled with great chess: Chess Forum on Thompson St - a sacred shop to buy boards, great players in Washington Square Park you can play anytime for 5 bucks, (ask for my favorite guy, David). But perhaps my favorite place to play in NYC is the Marshall Chess Club, founded 1915, occupying an entire townhouse on West 10th and 5th Ave, where Duchamp would play. Then there’s the mind boggling Shannon Number, 10^120, the number of unique chess games. This number is so large, it exceeds the number of atoms in the universe, 10^80. There are more possible chess games than atoms in the universe. Unreal.

The love and support for LA after the recent fires, and anytime people help strangers, gives one a fleetly glimmer of hope in humanity. One of the things to truly love about gridlocked and vocal fried LA is the food. We're spoiled in NY, but the produce in California is the next best to Italy. So if for no other reason than to show love for a hard business, during hard times, some of my favorite LA food spots are: Speranza, Lolo, Gra, Cafe Stella, Tower Bar, Jar, Pace, Gjusta, Locanda Portono, Fluffy’s. Not to mention great tacos, and fruit cups galore. All so good.

The best products in any category are classic, quality, and fairly priced. There are a handful of great faucet companies out there, with solid metal parts. It’s easy to love the high end companies like PE Guerin or Rubinetterie Stella, but I also love the utilitarian workhorse brands like T&S Brass and Chicago Faucets, they can be just as beautiful.

My favorite plant store in NY- actually my favorite store in NY. Good selection, fair prices and wonderful staff. Grand street’s nest. Love those guys. If you ever need some plants, they’ll pot and deliver. Plants make everything better.

Comedy is the highest art. Despite holding that belief, I’m compulsive with puns and dad jokes. I must get it from my mom… also, side note, the best meme account nobody knows about is @the_imperial_palace
